If you don't want other people to go through your personal files, then you should look for a specialized application to protect them. A good solution is Cryper. This lightweight utility can encrypt files and folders at a moment's notice, without asking for too much user input. Its straightforward functionality makes it particularly useful if you need to lock and unlock files on a regular basis.

The application is available in a free version, but it can process a maximum of 5 files at a time and it comes with a nag screen as well. Installing Cryper is a quick procedure, which does not require too much thought. The application is compatible with all modern Windows versions and its hardware requirements are modest.

There are several ways to begin an encryption process. You can either select the appropriate options in the File menu or on the toolbar or click the large icons on the user interface. The fastest way to start encrypting data is to drag and drop the files over these icons. Before encrypting any files, you have to type and re-type a password. Alternatively, you can import a key file.

Besides encrypting individual files, the application allows you to target entire folders as well. If you attempt to open an encrypted file, Cryper will launch automatically and it will prompt you for the password. The application is capable of creating self-decrypting files as well, in case you have to send encrypted data to someone who doesn't have Cryper on their computer.

Another useful feature is the possibility of encrypting text. You can type your text on a separate window just like in a notepad utility. When you are done, you only need to click a button and your coherent text will be replaced with special characters instantly.

Pros

You can encrypt files and folders without any effort. The application works fast and it doesn't ask for too much user input. Besides files, Cryper can also encrypt and decrypt plain text.

Cons

The free version is limited to 5 files at a time and it displays a nag screen each time you encrypt or decrypt data. If you wish to protect your personal data on the fly, then Cryper is the solution you should look for.
